I’m working on a video project that I believe will help popularize the hackerspace idea and movement. I’m looking for people who are familiar with hackerspaces and would like to tell about their experiences.
I’m from Ukraine and with this project I want to introduce people to this kind of place and community. To give a brief introduction to hackerspaces through real people’s experiences and stories.
I have had already a nice conversation with @Ivan | Brayton Power and I’d like to collect some material first and then decide how to use it.
I’m not confident this project will have an extraordinary effect, but if you’d like to take part and contribute in some way, let’s do it

I’ve filmed quite a lot in my local Kyiv hackerspace, and I’ve made a couple of personal video series there. I’ll leave a link to my YouTube channel and to some of the videos. Those videos are not published yet due to my channel reorganization process, they were previously public on another channel that no longer exist.
I love to film in a documentary style, I’ve been doing this for about 15 years. Before focusing on the hackerspace topic I was deeply involved in BMX and skatebording, and I created a number of projects during that time.
That project is still ongoing! We have to contact the next hackerspace for this activity
And yes, there was a result, although my participation was insignificant.
I have some prepared questions about a person’s experience related to hackerspaces. The idea is to collect people’s answers and either cut them together in some way or publish them separately, with a few cosmetic edits, just to keep the conversation consistent. The video concept is basically quite simple - it is essentially a story that a person tell in a conversation mode.
And yeah, this project is also kinda my personal research into people’s motivation for visiting hackerspaces, to understand what place they occupy in society and what needs they satisfy.
A new hackerspace has opened in Kyiv recently, and before that I hadn’t really asked myself why does hackerspaces exist at all. So I came to the conclusion that people’s experience could give me an answer from this perspective. And since our new hackerspace needs newcomers, I thought it could be a useful content to attract new people and help them understand what this place is about. A lot of people either don’t know about hackerspaces or they don’t understand their purpose for themselves or for others.
Thanks a lot for sharing your idea – it sounds interesting and valuable, and I appreciate your openness about the research goals. However, when it comes to conducting research within our community, we need to follow a formal approval process.

Well, with this request I’m not addressing an organization, but individual people. If you personally have any concerns about participation in this project, which is in fact just an online conversion that would be recorded and used with your approval, we can discuss them here, so that maybe someone else’s concerns can also be taken into account.
The general purpose is to attract new people to hackerspaces, to let them know that hackerspaces exists and to explain their purpose through the real people’s experience, motivations and stories.

The author of the research is me, it is my personal initiative.

It is assumed that the conversation will be recorded on both sides in order to achieve the best possible final video/audio quality. This means that the interlocutor, with their explicit consent, shares their recording of the conversation. Any comments regarding the use of specific parts of the conversation are taken into account. I do not provide any guarantees that the material will be used in this project.
- What is the planned timeframe of the research?
There is no fixed timeframe. The project will continue as long as I remain interested in it.

Just to be clear: my core motivation for this project is to develop my YouTube channel along with my personal skills.
I’m interested in journalism, documentary filmmaking, and storytelling, and I want to try myself in this kind of genre. This type of content is new to me, but I see it as a good and useful life skill.
A key factor in this kind of activity is the topic. I’ve been into the hackerspace topic for quite a while, and I see the opportunities that such places and communities provide, for me and for other people. I don’t have many topics around me right now that I can work on, but hackerspace topic is one I’m quite familiar with, and it is possible to work with it remotely and internationally.
So, I’d like to practice my interviewing and storytelling skills in a context that I know pretty well. I believe the final result of this project will be helpful for hackerspaces anyway.
I would appreciate it if you’d like to take part in an interview so I can practice a bit. And together we can make something valuable, for sure.
